Claim Procedures

Claim Reporting

Please report all claims immediately, by one of the following methods:

  • Business hours phone (toll free): Call 1-888-754-4221, Press 3 for the claims department.
  • After hours phone (toll free): Call 1-800-609-8041 for emergencies only.
  • Fax: 866-328-0833.  Print out and complete our loss notice form (PDF, 39 kb).
  • E-mail:  tran.claim@rlicorp.com (click the address to send email).

A claims assistant will be available to take new losses during our normal business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday.

The earlier we have notice of a claim, the easier it is for us to locate claimants, rule out bodily injury, identify and locate witnesses, and inspect and photograph the accident scene and vehicle damage. Immediate notice is especially important when accidents involve potentially serious injuries and damages, including fatalities, unconscious claimants, broken bones, paralysis, loss of limb, air-lifted claimants, major environmental cleanup and three or more adverse vehicles. Because of the heightened potential for litigation in cases of serious injury, we try to immediately retain a defense attorney, a reconstruction engineer (to go to the scene) as well as an independent adjuster.

Immediate notice is even more important when a serious accident does not appear to be your driver’s fault. We need to make sure that our attorney, reconstructionist, and independent adjuster collect and preserve evidence to defend you in the event that the at-fault party, at-fault party’s family, or non-negligent passengers pursue a claim. This is always a possibility, given the litigious nature of our society and the rules governing joint and several liability in many jurisdictions.

Please report all claims to us. If a claim is minor or appears to be a no-liability claim, you may report it to us as “incident only,” and it will not appear on your loss runs. However, if we think that a claim so reported should be investigated, we will open it with a reserve. The examiner will call you to provide the basis for doing so. Your premium includes payment for claims service and loss adjustment expenses, so these are services for which you have already paid.

Claim Handling

All claims are supervised by our staff of examiners in Atlanta, Ga. When deemed necessary, we retain independent adjusters and appraisers to assist in the investigation and resolution of claims.

The examiner will try to contact you within 24 hours of receiving a new loss notice form as well as keep you informed over the course of your claim. In most cases, the examiner or the independent adjuster will attempt to contact your driver for a non-recorded interview within a few days. Since drivers are sometimes reluctant or too busy to talk to us, we may ask for your assistance in obtaining your driver’s cooperation. If anyone in your company has conducted an investigation into the loss, we request that you provide us with copies of the results as early as possible.
